Clever woollen things: nappies

Woollen nappies. Photo: Uma Leht

Freibergi Lilian (35) at Karula Ala-Mähkli farm came up with an idea for woollen nappies, and has tried them out on her own children.

‘They’re good nappies - they’re warm, they breathe, they don’t leak, and they’re made from material that is available at home’ says Lilian.
The woollen nappy pants are made from the softest organic wool. The edges are decorated using a dye made from plants and beer.
There are two options to choose from: either a piece of cloth made from wool, or a piece of gauze that is changed when needed. The nappies come in three sizes.

The nappies can be used for children aged from two weeks up to two years. The nappies can be washed in a washing machine using the wool programme and wool shampoo.
Lilian is happy with the nappies. ‘And you don’t need to wash them all the time. Wool is a material that doesn’t attract bad smells. You just air them out’ she says.
Lilian and the women in Karula village are planning a woollen nappy campaign. People have been wanting to buy them, and we’re now trying to come up with a nice package and sell them' says Lilian.
